Apprentice Content Designer

Choosing an apprenticeship

What were you doing before you started your apprenticeship with us?

Before starting at CDS, I was studying Graphic Design, Psychology and English Language at A-level. I was also developing my own social media platforms, sparking an interest in Content Design.

Why did you choose to take the apprenticeship route?

When coming to the end of my studies, I decided I wanted to gain first-hand experience from the get-go! I wanted to pursue an entry-level role in Content Design and learn from industry professionals.

So far, what have been the benefits of choosing an apprenticeship?

I’ve gained invaluable knowledge about standards/expectations of content design in an agency setting. I’m working on real-life client briefs and learning a lot. I’ve also been offered the opportunity to complete online training courses to gain a more in-depth understanding of the Adobe Creative Suite!

What did your family or friends think about you choosing an apprenticeship route?

They were very supportive of my decision! They thought it was a great opportunity for me to improve my design skills.

Your role at Bailie Group

What does your role involve?

My role involves designing content for clients, whether it be an informational booklet/leaflet or re-designing a website. I’ve worked with some interesting clients so far; they include MET Police and Public Health Wales.

What projects are you working on that involves you liaising/working with colleagues across your team or wider business?

I’m currently working on a project for MET Police, it means I have to liaise with the Account Manager heading up the project and other members of my team to ensure the content is sent to the client on time and in line with the design considerations. The Account Manager will provide me with feedback if any amends are needed.

How does your day-to-day work link to the apprenticeship that you're completing?

My apprenticeship is helping me understand more about the key principles of Content Marketing and Design. I design content for CDS’ clients every day and I am gaining a better understanding of why we design in certain ways for different platforms/audiences.

What support are you getting from your team and wider business?

During my first few weeks at CDS, I shadowed my colleagues to learn what each person does on a day-to-day basis. My manager has also provided me with the opportunity to utilise online courses to learn more of the technical skills needed to create content quickly and accurately. I was thrown into live client projects straight away, meaning I’m applying the new skills I’m learning every day!

Overall Thoughts

Would you recommend the apprenticeship route to others?

Yes! I’d recommend the apprenticeship route to others. It’s a fantastic opportunity for people who wants to develop a better understanding of their chosen career, whilst also learning how to effectively apply it to their job role!
